Google Workspace Review: Week of October 2, 2026
The LCMH take on Google Workspace news for the week of October 2, 2026: simpler client-side encryption, the end of Gems, Meet/Teams interop and more.
Updated on 12 October 2026
Two announcements deserve attention this week. The simple setup option for client-side encryption turns a security control once reserved for technical teams into something an admin without crypto expertise can deploy. And Google confirms the end of Gems, replaced by skills, a change that touches anyone who took the time to tailor Gemini. The rest is mostly convenience or narrow use cases.
Client-side encryption: setup in minutes, not days
Google adds a simple setup option for client-side encryption (CSE) in the Admin console. By combining Cloud HSM Keys with Google Identity, it automates a flow that previously required standing up a third-party key service and configuring an identity provider. With CSE, data is encrypted by the customer’s keys before it reaches Google servers, making the customer the sole arbiter of its data, a strong argument for HIPAA, ITAR or sovereignty requirements. This is, in our view, the most useful announcement of the week: it brings a protection that used to be the preserve of large, well-staffed organizations within reach of small teams. The manual path with a third-party key service remains available for anyone who wants to keep their keys outside Google. For where CSE fits in a wider strategy, our piece on keeping your data in Europe with data regions sets the context. Read Google’s announcement.
Skills replace Gems: plan the transition
Google introduced skills, reusable instructions that guide Gemini, in the Gemini app and most Workspace apps. A skill can encode a brand voice for drafting posts or a template for lesson prep, and several skills can combine in a single conversation. In its late September 2026 post, Google says skills will replace Gems as the tool for tailoring instructions, with a gradual rollout to Workspace users. We advise not to invest further in new Gems and to prepare the switch, especially since one limit bites day to day: a skill does not sync between the Gemini app and Workspace apps, so you must recreate it on each side. This is the kind of announcement that justifies a migration plan, above all for teams that built Gems they rely on. Read Google’s announcement.
Meet and Teams interop on AOSP hardware: useful if you own the right gear
Interoperability between Google Meet and Microsoft Teams video conferencing devices becomes generally available since October 1, 2026, after a preview phase. In practice, a Meet device on Android (AOSP) can join a Teams meeting, and an AOSP-based Teams Rooms device can join a Meet meeting. It is available to all Workspace customers with compatible Meet hardware. For organizations that live with both ecosystems, it removes a friction point in meeting rooms and adds weight to a choice between Meet and Teams, a topic we cover in our guide to Meet’s advanced features. The scope stays limited to AOSP room hardware, so the impact depends entirely on your fleet. Read Google’s announcement.
API-driven comments and suggestions in Docs, Sheets and Slides
Developers can now create, read and manage comments through the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides APIs. In Docs, the API also handles suggested edits: an automated tool proposes a revision for user review rather than rewriting the text directly, which keeps a human in the loop. The gradual rollout started on September 30, 2026, and comment support in the MCP servers remains in developer preview. For an organization that connects Workspace to internal review tools or content pipelines, this is an awaited building block, in the same spirit as what Gemini in Workspace already enables. The value is real but narrow: it concerns teams that build integrations, not the end user. Read Google’s announcement.
Gemini student hub for Education: outside the EEA
Google opens its student hub, until now limited to personal accounts, to Google Workspace for Education users of all ages. The hub brings Gemini’s learning tools together in one place: a study notebook, flashcards and practice quizzes. Turning it on depends on the Generative AI settings in the Admin console, so an institution keeps control. The decisive point for European schools: the feature is not available in the European Economic Area. The announcement therefore has no effect for a good part of our readership until Google opens the EEA. Read Google’s announcement.
Customizable captions in Google Vids
Captions in Google Vids become fully customizable: font, typography, on-screen position and animation, to match a brand’s style. The feature is available now across a broad set of editions, from Business to Education to Nonprofits, with no admin control or specific user setting. For a marketing or communications team producing social videos, it is a welcome bit of polish. For everyone else, it stays a cosmetic detail most teams can ignore. Read Google’s announcement.
Upgraded AI voiceovers in Google Vids
Google updates the text-to-speech engine behind voiceovers and avatar narration in Vids with the Gemini 3.8 Flash Lite TTS model, which promises more natural intonation and faster generation for real-time preview. There is no admin control or user setting, and the feature is already rolled out across a broad set of editions. It is a welcome quality bump for anyone creating voiceovers in Vids, but most teams will only notice it if they already use that feature. Read Google’s announcement.

Frequently asked questions
- What does the simple setup option for Workspace client-side encryption add?
- It cuts client-side encryption (CSE) setup from days to minutes. Google combines its Cloud HSM keys with Google Identity and automates much of the configuration in the Admin console. An admin can deploy CSE in a few clicks, without standing up a third-party key service or configuring an external identity provider. The manual path with a third-party key service is still available for organizations that want to keep their keys outside Google. This is good news for any body subject to compliance rules such as HIPAA or ITAR.
- Do Gemini skills really replace Gems?
- Yes. Google is rolling out skills, reusable instructions that guide Gemini, in the Gemini app and most Workspace apps. Skills will replace Gems as the tool for tailoring instructions. The transition is announced in a post published in late September 2026. One caveat matters today: a skill does not sync between the Gemini app and Workspace apps, so you must recreate it in each environment.
- Is Google Meet and Microsoft Teams interoperability available to everyone?
- It is generally available since October 1, 2026, but only for Google Meet video conferencing hardware running Android (AOSP). A Meet device can join a Teams meeting, and an AOSP-based Teams Rooms device can join a Meet meeting. It is available to all Google Workspace customers with compatible Meet hardware. It does not apply to the Meet or Teams software on laptops or phones.
- What is programmatic comment management in the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides APIs?
- Developers can now create, read and manage comments through the Docs, Sheets and Slides APIs. In Docs, the API also handles suggested edits: a third-party tool proposes a revision for user review instead of changing the text directly. The gradual rollout started on September 30, 2026. Comment support in the MCP servers remains in developer preview.
- Is the Gemini student hub available in Europe?
- No. The Gemini student hub is available to Google Workspace for Education users of all ages, but not in the European Economic Area. It brings Gemini's learning tools together in one place: a study notebook, flashcards and practice quizzes. Turning it on depends on the Generative AI settings in the Workspace Admin console. Institutions in the EEA cannot use it for now.
