Shopify Subscriptions: create recurring revenue for your store
How to set up subscriptions on Shopify to generate recurring revenue: monthly boxes, auto-replenishment and loyalty programs.
Updated on 12 February 2025
Recurring revenue as a growth driver
Subscriptions transform one-time purchases into predictable, recurring revenue. For a Shopify store, subscription models increase customer lifetime value (LTV), reduce acquisition cost and create a stable revenue base. Shopify natively supports subscriptions through its APIs and several dedicated apps.
The three subscription models
Auto-replenishment
The simplest model. The customer orders a consumable product (coffee, cosmetics, dietary supplements, cleaning products) and automatically receives a delivery at regular intervals. The customer chooses the frequency (weekly, monthly, every two months) and can modify or cancel at any time.
This model works for products that customers buy regularly. The benefit for the customer is convenience (no need to remember to reorder) and often a discount compared with a one-time purchase (typically 10 to 15%).
Curated box
The merchant curates a product selection each month and sends it to subscribers. This model creates excitement (the surprise effect) and helps customers discover new products. Themed boxes (gourmet food, beauty, wine, crafts) are especially popular.
Curation takes more work than replenishment but drives stronger engagement. Subscribers often share their unboxing on social media, which creates free marketing content.
Member access
The customer pays a monthly or annual subscription to access exclusive benefits: reserved discounts, early access to new products, exclusive content, free shipping. This model does not require shipping a product each cycle and generates a high margin.
Technical setup on Shopify
The Shopify Subscriptions app (free) covers basic needs: creating subscription plans, managing billing cycles and a customer portal to modify subscriptions. For advanced features, Recharge is the most popular app, with churn management, subscription analytics and retention workflows.
The technical setup includes adding the subscription widget to product pages, configuring transactional emails (confirmation, renewal reminder, payment failure) and implementing the customer portal.
Optimize retention
The churn rate (unsubscription) is the key metric of subscription models. A monthly churn of 5% means you lose half of your subscribers in a year. Reducing churn by 1% has a significant impact on annual revenue.
Offer flexibility. Customers who can pause, change the frequency or swap products unsubscribe less than those who only have the option to cancel. Communicate regularly about the value of the subscription with exclusive content and reserved offers.
