Shopify POS: unify your online and in-store sales
How Shopify POS connects your physical store and e-commerce with unified inventory, single customer file and consolidated reports.
Updated on 12 June 2024
Unified commerce is no longer reserved for large retailers
Shopify POS connects your online store and your physical points of sale on a single platform. Inventory, customers and orders are unified. A customer who buys online and returns to the store is recognized. A product sold in store is immediately removed from online stock. This unification, once reserved for large retailers with expensive systems, is accessible to all Shopify merchants.
Unified real-time inventory
Inventory synchronization is the most immediate benefit of Shopify POS. Every sale, whether online or in store, updates inventory in real time across all channels. A merchant with a physical store and an e-commerce site no longer needs to manage two separate inventories or risk overselling.
Shopify POS also manages stock transfers between locations. If a product is out of stock in one store but available in another, the system flags it and makes the transfer easier. This global inventory visibility optimizes product availability for customers.
A single customer file
Shopify POS creates a unified customer profile that brings together online and in-store purchases. The in-store salesperson sees the customer’s complete history: online orders, returns, preferences. This customer knowledge enables personalized service that builds loyalty.
The loyalty program works across both channels. Points earned online can be used in store and vice versa. Email marketing campaigns target customers based on their overall purchasing behavior, not just online or in store.
Click and collect and in-store returns
Shopify POS natively supports click and collect (buy online, pick up in store) and in-store returns for online orders. These omnichannel journeys have become standard consumer expectations. Merchants who offer them see an increase in average basket value, because customers who come to pick up an order often buy additional products on site.
Unified commerce results
Shopify data show that merchants using Shopify POS see significant growth in omnichannel sales. Unified commerce does not merely add online and in-store sales together. It creates synergies that increase overall revenue.
