Shopify Markets: sell internationally from a single store

How Shopify Markets enables merchants to sell in multiple countries with local currencies, languages and pricing from one back-office.

Updated on 18 March 2024

Sell worldwide without multiplying stores

Shopify Markets transforms a single Shopify store into an international selling platform. Each market (country or region) has its own configuration: local currency, language, adapted pricing, custom domain and specific catalog. Everything is managed from a single back-office, which eliminates the complexity of maintaining several separate stores.

How Shopify Markets works

Shopify Markets is based on the concept of markets. A market corresponds to a country or a group of countries with shared settings. You create a “Europe” market with the euro as currency and French, German and Spanish as languages. You create a “North America” market with the dollar and English. Each market can have its own subdomain or dedicated domain.

Localization goes beyond translation. Shopify automatically adapts the address format, local payment methods and shipping options according to the visitor’s country. A German customer sees prices in euros, pays with the methods they know and gets a familiar shopping experience.

Managed Markets: simplified cross-border selling

Managed Markets (formerly Markets Pro) goes further by handling the regulatory complexities of international selling. The service automatically calculates local taxes and customs duties at checkout. The customer pays the total amount at the time of order, which eliminates unpleasant surprises on delivery and reduces parcel refusals.

Managed Markets also handles local tax compliance. The taxes collected are remitted to the relevant authorities by Shopify’s logistics partner. For a French merchant selling in Germany or the United Kingdom, this eliminates the need to register for VAT in each country.

Adapt your catalog by market

Shopify Markets lets you hide certain products in certain markets. A product that cannot be shipped outside France does not appear for foreign visitors. A product with regulatory restrictions in a country is automatically excluded from the local catalog.

Prices can be adjusted by market. You can apply a global adjustment percentage (for example +10% for the Swiss market) or set fixed prices per product and per market. This flexibility lets you adapt your pricing strategy to local conditions.

The opportunity for merchants in Alsace

Alsace’s geographic position, on the border of Germany and Switzerland, creates a natural opportunity for cross-border selling. Shopify Markets lets you target these neighboring markets with a localized shopping experience, without major technical investment.

LCMH, a Shopify partner in Alsace, supports merchants in configuring Shopify Markets for international selling.
